This workshop is intended for those that are willing to commit to painting outdoors or who would like to learn how to paint quickly and improve their work. Since there will be some initial expense involved for each attendee, I would like to provide a "bare necessities" list to keep expenses down. You can expect about a $60 or more investment in quality materials.
Paint:
I use and recommend Winsor & Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paints. They are of excellent quality, and relatively inexpensive (about $5 per 37mm tube if purchased online)*. Grumbacher "Max" is also an excellent water-miscible oil paint brand. They are just a shade more expensive.
Water mixable, or water-miscible oil paints are oil paints that are formulated to wash clean with soap and water without having to use harsh chemicals or solvents.
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue
Permanent Alizarin Crimson
Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Blue
Raw Sienna
Burnt Umber
Here is a link to Dick Blick for the best price on the Winsor & Newton brand. If you only purchase the above in 37mm tubes, it will be < $40 + shipping.
Brushes:
I recommend Jerry's Artarama for their Pro-Stroke Premium bristle brushes for the same reason. They have sets that can be purchased online or at their retail location in San Antonio.
There is a set here called the Explorer Set for $8.39. This would be your "bare minimum" set of brushes.
If you would like to spend a little more, but still keep the cost down, you would do well with the Filbert set of 5, and the Bright Set of 5 on the same page. The Round set of 5 should make it to your brush collection eventually too. These are great brushes, and if you take care of them, should last you a long time.
Palette knives
Here is a link for painting knives on Jerry's website
Minimum:
#12T (3- 5/8" blade)
#25T (1 -1/4" blade)
You can expand your set later. I'll be glad to give you some recommendations in the workshop.
Painting supports:
At least 3 canvas panels, 11 x 14 inches. Jerry's has these on sale, but they can be purchased inexpensively at WalMart, Hobby Lobby or Michaels in a package of 3. They can typically be purchased for about $1 apiece. I will have plenty of extras available for what I paid for them.
Get a small can of artist quality odorless mineral spirits.
Ms. Sue's will provide easels, but if you'd like recommendations for easels, I can provide you with several websites to find one you are comfortable using long-term.
I hope I have provided enough of the basic information here. If there is enough interest, I can use my account to do a bulk order for supplies to be reimbursed at the first session to save on shipping and tax.
Feel free to call or email me for further questions.
